HISTORY OF THE LINCOLN IMP

The Imp is the symbol of Lincoln and was the inspiration for The Business Imp. It’s also the reason that one of the city’s football teams (Lincoln City FC) is called The Imps.

Historic tales tell of two imps being sent by Satan to do his mischievous work on earth. Apparently the two imps found their way to Lincoln Cathedral where they caused mayhem damaging furniture at the Cathedral and generally being a nuisance.

When an angel came out of a book of hymns to stop the imps, one of the imps decided to start throwing rocks at the angel, but the other imp hid. One of the imps was said to have been turned to stone and can still be seen at the Cathedral. The other managed to escape but is said to circle the cathedral on particularly windy days looking for his friend.
